Christina Tosi and Mindy Segal at the 2015 James Beard Awards

JBF is now accepting entries for the 2016 James Beard Awards! Entries for all James Beard Award categories (that’s Restaurant and Chef; Broadcast Media; Journalism; Book; and Restaurant Design) can be submitted here.

The Foundation’s Awards committees have announced the following changes to the below Awards categories and criteria:

In order to recognize the growing coverage of food and food-related issues in general-interest media, the criteria for Broadcast Media's TV Segment award have been expanded. In addition to recurring and ongoing food-themed segments on a non-food program, the committees will now accept entries for stand-alone segments about food and food-related issues. Submitted content can be in the form of live or taped in-studio demos and interviews, as well as field-produced pieces. “Given the increasing attention paid to food and food concerns, the Broadcast Media Awards committee wishes to recognize the value of TV segments about food whether they are part of a regular series or not,” says committee chair Emerald Yeh. “These pieces can be about food issues, as well as cooking and restaurants.”

Over in the Journalism Awards, the Food Politics, Policy, and the Environment category has been renamed Food Reporting. This award recognizes "excellence in investigative reporting, analysis, and public-service journalism across all fields of inquiry."

Also in Journalism: Individual Food Blog and Group Food Blog have been consolidated into a single award for blogging called Food Blog, which recognizes "enterprise and excellence in an episodic food-or drink-related blog that uses the unique tools of the medium (such as community, real-time publishing, and flexibility of layouts and embedded elements) to their fullest advantage."

Our Book Awards committee has modified its approach to evaluating books for Photography. Prior to this year, all entered books were automatically considered for photography in addition to the authors’ selected category for consideration. Going forward, submitters may choose to enter the Photography category in addition to the initial category. Entrants must pay an additional fee of $25 to have their submission considered for the Photography award. Books may not be submitted solely for this award; they must be entered into another Book Award category as well.

The complete list of James Beard Awards categories and criteria can be found on our entry site. Please note that one may submit up to two entries per subcategory of the Restaurant and Chef Awards.

Submission deadlines are as follows:

Book Awards: December 11, 2015

Restaurant and Chef Awards: December 31, 2015

Broadcast Media Awards and Journalism Awards: January 6, 2016

Restaurant Design Awards: January 29, 2016

Our Restaurant and Chef Award semifinalists will be announced February 17, 2016. The final nominees for every award category will be revealed on March 15, 2016.

The James Beard Awards gala will return to the Lyric Opera of Chicago next year, taking place on Monday, May 2, 2016. Our Book, Broadcast & Journalism Awards dinner will be held at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers in New York City on Tuesday, April 26, 2016.
