From graham crackers to McDonald’s fries, America has long lived up to the idiom, “you are what you eat.” In her new work, The American Plate: A Culinary History in 100 Bites, historian and food scholar Libby H. O’Connell uses iconic foods to illustrate how our culinary cravings have been shaped by economics, technology, and social movements across the centuries. Including trivia, recipes, and photos for dozens of dishes, this tome provides a mouthwatering perspective on America’s past, present, and future.
Tickets to events held at the James Beard House cover the cost of food and a unique dining experience. Dinners are prepared by culinary masters from all regions of the United States and around the world. All alcoholic beverages are provided on a complimentary basis and are not included in the ticket price.
