Earlier this week, in La Quinta, California, America Cooks with Chefs arrived at its exciting conclusion: six participants, all ordinary Americans, competed in a live competition at the Clinton Health Matters Annual Activation Summit. The challenge? Prepare and serve a delicious meal with fewer than 800 calories. Our lucky contestants had a bit of help: before the competition, each was paired with a JBF Award–winning chef, who welcomed their respective trainees into their restaurant kitchens and taught them their recipes, with some healthy cooking tips on the side. The chefs also flew to California to support the contestants during the event.

It's time for the final phase of America Cooks with Chefs, our healthy cooking competition in partnership with the Clinton Foundation. We've paired six ordinary Americans from across the country with JBF Award–winning chefs, who have equipped our contestants with nutritious recipes and valuable cooking tips for healthier lifestyles. With stops in Chicago, Miami, and La Quinta, California in the books, America Cooks with Chefs now heads to Los Angeles for its fourth episode. In this seven-part cooking competition, contestants go behind the scenes at a James Beard Award–winning chef’s restaurant to learn tips, tricks, and advice for cooking more nutritious meals. The participants will also attend the 2015 Clinton Health Matters Initiative (CHMI) conference in California, where they will demonstrate their new skills in a live cooking challenge judged by a panel of celebrities.

In this seven-episode cooking competition, contestants will go behind the scenes at a James Beard Award–winning chef’s restaurant to learn tips, tricks, and advice for cooking more nutritious meals. Hot on the heels of our first episode, America Cooks with Chefs returns this week with its second installment. Each episode will follow one contestant as they go behind the scenes at a James Beard Award-winning chef’s restaurant to learn tips, tricks, and advice for cooking more nutritious meals.

 

Episode two follows Michael Angelo Gonzalez, a Miami native who loves his family’s African American and Cuban traditional foods, but is coming to understand that their diet is harming their health. Michael wants to make a change: he wants to learn budget-friendly cooking techniques so that he can continue to cook the foods his family loves, but in a healthier way.

America Cooks with Chefs Announces Healthy Cooking Competition Contestants

 

American Cooks with Chefs, the healthy cooking initiative launched by the Clinton Foundation in partnership with JBF, has revealed the six contestants who will pair up with James Beard Award–winning chefs to create the ultimate healthy and delicious dish.

 

The contestants will meet their chef collaborators at Kitchen Camps, where they’ll “make-under” their favorite decadent dish into a nutritious meal. The ultimate test comes at the Clinton Health Matters Conference in January 2015, where the contestants will compete in a Live Cooking Challenge

 

Here are the contestants and their JBF Award-winning chef mentors:

  • Jonathan Saturay (NYC) will be paired with chef Maria Hines (Seattle)
  • Vinita Lark Williams (Los Angeles) will be paired with chef Mary Sue Milliken (Los Angeles)

James Beard Foundation's Taste America® Preview: San Francisco

 

We’re down to the final stops of our national epicurean tour, James Beard Foundation’s Taste America®. This weekend we visit San Francisco for two days of star-studded events featuring Taste America All-Star and James Beard Award winner Paul Qui and local star and James Beard Award winner Michael Mina. Join us Friday night for a reception with dishes from some of the city’s hottest chefs, followed by a unique four-course menu prepared by Qui and Mina.
