Eye Candy: Sarma at the Beard House

Call us biased, but we think a night at the Beard House is a dining experience unlike any other. Guests sit in a historic New York City townhouse, while chefs cook in the kitchen where James Beard himself once held culinary court. Diners are at once rooted in history and experiencing the latest trends and techniques from around the country, as chefs whip up once-in-a-lifetime meals that are exclusive to their Beard House showcase.

Service in the Beard House kitchen is a madcap adventure of gastronomic acrobatics, careful planning, and unanticipated improvisation (you try cooking six courses for 80 people in your home kitchen). The photos below, from 2016 JBF Award semifinalist Cassie Piuma’s recent Beard House dinner, show the intensity of concentration, the joy in teamwork... Read more >

Happy Hour: Sarma's Gin Mare Cocktail

With winter in our rearview mirror, we can finally welcome spring with open arms. We think that deserves a toast, and we've got the perfect recipe for it. Brandon Rucker, beverage director of neighborhood darling Sarma in Somerville, Massachusetts, recently brought his skills to the Beard House when he joined his colleague (and 2016 JBF Award semifinalist for Best Chef: Northeast) Cassie Piuma for a modern Middle Eastern feast. Rucker paired this elegant, refreshing cocktail with Piuma's seven-layer hummus for a crowd-pleasing course that mixed seasonal ingredients with the flavors of the... Read more >

Piuma heads to New York on International Women’s Day to treat Beard House diners to a feast honoring the culinary contributions of women across the globe. In anticipation of her dinner, we spoke to the Massachusetts native about her memorable sushi date with her newborn daughter, her ultimate breakfast sandwich, and her comprehensive list of New England's best eats.

Eye Candy: Monkfish Bouillabaisse with Caviar and Clams

A shining gem in multiple JBF Award winner Barbara Lynch’s empire of exceptional restaurants, Menton has been steadily garnering accolades since it opened in 2010. Recently, chef Scott Jones and JBF Award–winning wine director Cat Silirie joined us at the Beard House for a tantalizing menu inspired by the restaurant’s namesake town on the French-Italian border. Guests were dazzled by Jones’s array of luxurious dishes throughout the evening, including showstoppers like seeded foie gras lollipops and tuna tartare with truffles and white soy. Each dish reminded us why Menton has continued to remain an industry darling, but perhaps our favorite was the chef's creative take on bouillabaisse, the traditional Provençal fish stew. What arrived on guests’ tables was an artfully composed plate of creamy... Read more >
