Let’s see: we’ve revealed the 2013 semifinalists, shared our latest batch of America’s Classics, and announced who’s hosting the ceremonies at Lincoln Center and Gotham Hall. What could be left to tell about this year’s James Beard Awards? Ah, yes: the final nominees!
To continue our annual tradition of unveiling the nominees in a vibrant food city, we’re bringing the Beard Awards show to Charleston on Monday, March 18. The announcement will take place at Lowndes Grove Plantation, and will begin at 11:30 AM Eastern Time. After some brief formalities, we’ll start revealing the nominees in all of our awards categories, from restaurants and chefs to our various food media awards. If you want to follow along, just park yourself in front of our Twitter feed.
The nominee announcement includes another special tradition: a grand chef dinner that benefits the JBF scholarship program. Part of our ongoing Friends of James Beard Benefit series, this year’s fundraiser will be held at Fort Moultrie (pictured above), a historic monument and national park site on Sullivan’s Island, located on the eastern edge of Charleston Harbor. The gathering will feature Charleston chefs who have either won a Beard Award, received a nomination, or recently cooked at the Beard House. Their three-course menu will pay tribute to Lowcountry cuisine and treasured regional ingredients. Tickets may be purchased at jbfcharlestonevent.com.
