We're just weeks away from the start of our 2017 Taste America national tour, a ten-city run of spectacular dining events and exciting culinary programming celebrating the best of American cuisine from coast to coast. With such a wide breadth of fantastic food available across the country, we asked this year's James Beard Award winners from each region of our Best Chefs in America to give some guidance on their favorite local haunts. Below, we tapped Best Chef: West winner Corey Lee of San Francisco's lauded Benu for his ultimate Bay Area recs.

Date Night: Chez Panisse (in Berkeley) is a timeless classic with a quiet ambiance where you can spend hours of quality time with someone. It’s hard to leave without feeling warm and fuzzy.

Cheap Eats: One of the best bargains in the city, San Tung is the perfect place to feast on dumplings and friend chicken wings.

Breakfast/Brunch: Tartine has some of the most delicious laminated pastries anywhere. It’s a must-visit for any gourmand traveling through San Francisco.

Drinks/Cocktails: Trou Normand offers great classic cocktails (with a focus on Armagnac, Cognac, and Calvados) in a historic downtown building. They also have a serious housemade charcuterie program to enjoy while sipping.

Bakery/Desserts: The kouign-amann alone is worth a visit to b.patisserie. Co-owner and pastry chef Belinda Leong creates an impressive selection of perfectly balanced pastries and desserts.
