The James Beard Foundation is mourning the loss of Gus Schumacher, co-founder and executive vice president of Wholesome Wave. Schumacher was a dedicated advocate for improving food access and agricultural policies around the globe, and a recipient of a JBF Leadership Award in 2013 for his lifelong efforts to improve access to fresh local food in underserved communities.
"Our Foundation and the food policy world has lost a gentle giant in the passing of Gus Schumacher," said James Beard Foundation president Susan Ungaro. "Gus was honored with our James Beard Leadership Award for his passionate advocacy fighting hunger and recognizing the pivotal role of good farm-fresh food. As a founder of the nonprofit Wholesome Wave and as a former trustee of our Foundation, Gus was an inspiration to all of us who had the honor of calling him a friend."
