Serious food lovers tend to be an opinionated bunch. If there’s one thing they agree on, it’s their strong feelings about ice cream. Simultaneously elegant and nostalgic, it hits the sweet spot with just about everyone. We polled our staff to find out which flavors rank supreme in our offices:
“The first time I went to Gramercy Tavern, Claudia Fleming was still the pastry chef and I had the richest, darkest, carameliest caramel ice cream ever. Since then, I’ve often ordered caramel ice cream, but it’s never been as good. While writing this I noticed that Claudia Fleming has caramel ice cream on the dessert menu at the North Fork Table & Inn on Long Island. I know what my plans are this weekend!” —Alison Tozzi Liu, Editorial Director
“I love the Purple Cow (grape soda and vanilla custard) from Shake Shack. It always makes me feel like I’m five years old, but I don’t even care. It’s a worthy splurge.” —Jen Roberts, Awards and Database Manager
“In the summertime I crave the peach ice cream from Brushy Mountain Smokehouse & Creamery in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. It’s really, really good. Bonus: their barbecue is also fantastic.” —Lindsay Dula, Manager of Development
“Pistachio almond—and only from Baskin-Robbins! All other pistachio ice creams that I’ve tried just don’t do it for me. I always remember my dad taking me to Baskin-Robbins and allowing me to pick whatever ice cream I wanted. I usually picked vanilla, but after I tasted pistachio I was hooked.” —Chevy Mondesir, Reservations Coordinator
“I love, love, love coffee ice cream of any kind. For me, it straddles the space between chocolate and vanilla. Vanilla purists appreciate the complex simplicity of a good, creamy vanilla. Chocolate freaks love the richness and decadence that chocolate ice cream offers. To me, coffee is that balance: a pure expression of flavor and richness. And it feels like a grown-up flavor to boot.” —Izabela Wojcik, Director of House Programming
